8GB iPhone 3GS

There have been a lot of rumors flying around the internet about a 8GB iPhone 3GS.

Gizmodo just confirmed that the rumor is not true. Below is from Gizmodo.

UPDATE: A Rogers spokeperson returned our email, confirming our suspicions:

“You’re right, there is no 8GB 3G s iPhone. There is a formatting error on our website. It is being corrected asap”

GPush finally made it to the AppStore but was quickly pulled due to the server issues. Below is from the the makers of GPush

“On Saturday August 8, 2009 GPush made it into the App store. We are currently experiencing a server issue and have temporarily pulled the app from the store while we work on the problem. This is an issue with our servers not the application and we will not need to go through the approval process again. If you have already downloaded the application, please know we are working to resolve the issue as soon as possible.”

The team expects things to be back to normal and the app to be back in the AppStore in the next 24 hours.

A new version of iTunes was released. If you plan to jailbreak your iPhone3GS, do NOT update to iTunes 8.2.1. This version of iTunes is fine for all other devices, just not the iPhone 3GS.

Jailbreak Firmware 3.0.1

Apple has released firmware 3.0.1 for all iPhones. This updates fixes the SMS vulnerbility. Update your iPhone to the newsest firmware through iTunes ASAP.

Once updated you can jailbreak your iPhone using redsn0w 0.8. Below is from the iPhone-dev team.

“You can re-use redsn0w v0.8 we released a few weeks ago to jailbreak today’s 3.0.1 update. Just let iTunes update or restore you to official 3.0.1 then run redsn0w. The only “trick” is that when redsn0w asks you to identify the IPSW used, point it at the 3.0 IPSW instead of the 3.0.1 one. After the jailbreak, reinstall ultrasn0w 0.9 if you need the unlock.

More details:

The 3.0.1 release is a “branch” from 3.0 that occurs (code-wise) before all the 3.1 betas. The programs redsn0w needs to change for the jailbreak are identical when you compare the 3.0 and 3.0.1 versions. It seems pretty much the only changes Apple made were for the SMS bug, which affects programs that redsn0w doesn’t touch. That’s why you can re-use redsn0w 0.8 on 3.0.1 even though it was written for 3.0.

And since 3.0.1 doesn’t touch the baseband either, ultrasn0w 0.9 works for those needing the soft unlock. Just install it from the repo666.ultrasn0w.com repository using Cydia as usual.

We’ll at some point fix redsn0w to recognize both 3.0 and 3.0.1 IPSW’s, but really that’s the only change that would be made to it. Everything else would be identical, so there’s no need to wait for the “proper” version that recognizes the 3.0.1 IPSW as valid.”

Firmware 3.1 brings Augmented reality

When firmware 3.1 drops (believed to be sometime in September) it will bring a new feature that is going to enhance apps even more. The new feature that is coming is augmented reality. Augmented reality will take advantgae of the iPhone camera and add a variety of computer generated data to the screen. Below are some very usefull tips from the iphone-dev team

It looks like version 0.9 of ultrasn0w fixed up the vast majority of any problems people were seeing with the 3G/3GS carrier unlock. But here’s a brief list of fixes for anyone still seeing problems:

Unusual battery depletion is almost always caused by people choosing to “Restore from backup” instead of “Setup as new iPhone” when iTunes asks you. This isn’t caused by either the jailbreak or the unlock, but it’s a common 3.0 snafu. The fix is to just re-run the official 3.0 restore and choose “Setup as new” this time. Your music and apps and all that will still be synced, but you’ll get rid of any conflicting wifi, bluetooth, or carrier settings. Then just re-run redsn0w and install ultrasn0w.
Remember, ultrasn0w works with hacktivated phones too, but don’t outsmart redsn0w into thinking you don’t need hacktivation! If you don’t plan on using an official sim, don’t activate via iTunes with such a sim. Just keep your unofficial sim at all times and let redsn0w and ultrasn0w handle hacktivation :)
T-Mobile in the USA doesn’t use the 3G frequencies that the iPhones support, so turn off 3G in Settings->General->Network. (Some T-Mobile territories gracefully hand down to Edge mode, but most do not).
Certain unofficial plans have limitations on whether you can make calls and use data at the same time. That’s not unlock-related.
Some people have installed previous versions of ultrasn0w using non-standard techniques. While the ultrasn0w 0.9 update should have removed all previous versions of ultrasn0w, these users may have outsmarted our removal. So make sure you don’t still see /usr/bin/ultrasn0w present if you’re at ultrasn0w 0.9 (which doesn’t have such a binary anymore).
If you don’t need or plan to update to ultrasn0w 0.9 from a previous version, you can avoid having that red badge over Cydia by removing repo666 as a Cydia source. Don’t worry, you can always add it back later :) If you follow us on twitter you’ll be advised of any new updates anyway.

It looks like the the iphone-dev team also updated ultrasn0w. This of course unlocks your Apple iPhone 3G and 3GS. Below is from the iphone-dev team

“ultrasn0w version 0.9 is out! We believe it solves pretty much all of the various random issues that have been reported. Its features include:

Works on both 3G and 3GS
Works on hacktivated devices
Works regardless of how you jailbroke your device
Doesn’t patch any mach-o binary whatsoever. (Doesn’t require a separate patch as each new firmware comes out).
Doesn’t install any additional daemon
Has no race conditions, no popups about “Missing SIM”, no network issues
Is almost 7000 times smaller than its nearest competition :)
Is available now via Cydia. Source repo is http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com (that last “0” in ultrasn0w is a zero!)”

Note: The claim about being 7000 times smaller is no longer true. Geohot updated purplesn0w to version RC2 which is actually now smaller than ultrasn0w.

Geohot update his Apple iPhone 3GS unlock. Below is from geohot

Geohot released his own iPhone 3GS unlock. Below is from geohot.

“Wifi fails? Battery fails? Unlock fails? You need purplesn0w, the geohot 3GS unlock solution. Now I know you here a lot about different colors of sn0w, but I’m here to tell you why purplesn0w is the best. First off, what is purplesn0w? It’s a soft unlock for your 3GS that I’d actually use day to day. It’s not a daemon that takes any resources, and it doesn’t add a task to your baseband. It’s very close to a true unlock. All it does is patch three files, CommCenter, lockdownd, and your wildcard activation plist(which you need, activate w at&t sim first, no hacktivation support yet). That’s it, no other files are installed. Props to Oranav for the at+xlog exploit!
A full explanation is coming soon, but I think you clever reversers out there will see what it does, and see why it’s so pristine :-) The payload is radically different from other varieties of sn0w. beta as usual, back up first.

Be sure to have legit activated 3GS
Disable 3G if you don’t have it(like T-Mobile).
Add apt.geohot.comto Cydia
Install com.geohot.purplesn0w
Watch for success output in Cydia
Reboot, and enjoy your unlocked iPhone”

Purplera1n will be update to provide a ‘hackivation’. At this point you need to borrow a friends sim card from a legit iPhone carrier to activate your iPhone, or use redsn0w to hacktivate.

Redsn0w and Ultrasn0w updated

The iPhone-dev team updated both Redsn0w and Ultrasn0w to work with iPhone 3GS.

“Released: redsn0w 0.8 (incl. 3GS, hactivate, linux) http://is.gd/1pRlV. Ultrasn0W 0.8 (incl. 3GS support) (see Cydia).”

-Redsn0w now jailbreaks and hacktivates the iPhone 3GS as well.

- You can now install Cydia and Icy

- Linux version released

Winterboard now works on iPhone 3GS

Saurik updated winterboard to work with the iPhone 3GS. Below is from saurik.

“The newly released 0.9.2958 versions of MobileSubstrate and WinterBoard (upgraded to support ARM7/Thumb2) should now work on the iPhone 3GS.”

He also points out that “If Cydia asks you to upgrade WinterBoard, you should. Regardless, you can read the changelog: I fixed a few 3.x bugs. ;P”

Jailbreak iPhone 3GS

NOTE: This only works for the iPhone 3GS running firmware 3.0, not 3.0.1. Please use redsn0w to jailbreak 3.0.1 all other devices.

This guide will walk you through how to jailbreak your iPhone 3GS using purplera1n by geohot.

Note: Make sure your iPhone is running firmware 3.0 and you have the latest iTunes version installed

1. Download Windows purplera1n RC2a Mac purplera1n

2. Plug in your iPhone 3GS

3. Close iTunes if it is open

4. Run purplera1n.exe

5. Click on ‘make it ra1n’

6. Purplera1n will then put your device into restore mode.

Just wait until you see the image below on your iPhone 3GS

Once this appears you may see this mage apear from iTunes

Just click ‘OK’

7. It will now send its exploit and upload the payload.

8. It will now reboot your device

Note: At this point you will have the image below on your iPhone 3GS. Just wait for the iPhone 3GS to reboot. It takes around 45 seconds or so. Just wait and be patient. If it has been longer than 3 minutes, force reboot. To do this hold down the Home button and the power button until it reboots. Then start the process all over again.

9. Once it reboots, you will now have a new ‘Freeze’ icon

10. Open up Freeze and tap ‘Install Cydia’

11. Now reboot your device.

12. You will no longer Freeze so you can uninstall it by installing Cydelete from Cydia. Go into Settings>Cydelete> and turn On ‘Non-Cydia Deletion’. Now you can delete Freeze like you would any other app. Press and hold the app until it starts to wiggle, then just tap on the ‘x’ to delete.

That’s it! Once your iPhone reboots you will have Cydia.

How to jailbreak iPhone 3GS (Vista)

But this injection vector will be lost if you update to 3.1 using the official Apple IPSW, which updates the baseband. So stay away from official 3.1 IPSWs until we release the tools that let you update the firmware without updating the baseband.”
